Forest Summer Fun Day

Description

Let’s go play at the creek! It is hard to beat splashing around in the creek on these warm summer days! Dress to get wet, grab a bag lunch and let’s go! We will play some games, do some exploring and learn what’s happening in the forest during the summer! This program is for all children ages 5 & up, no experience is required!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. What will my child learn at Forest Summer Fun Day? Your child will learn outdoor skills that may include native plants and animals, navigating using a map and compass. They may learn how to build and maintain a fire safely, to identify natural shelters or build their own shelters. Whatever the activity, your child will learn to collaborate and work with a team to accomplish complex tasks.

  2. What should my child bring to Forest Summer Fun Day? Please send your child with a backpack containing snacks and water. Insect repellent is recommended. They will likely get wet and muddy so please send them with a change of clothes.

  3. What should my child not bring to Forest Summer Fun Day? Please do not send your child with electronics or cell phones. Things get wet and dirty so do not send them wearing anything that cannot get stained.

  4. What type of clothing do you recommend? Have your child dress to get wet. Make sure their shoes will stay on in the mud, old sneakers are best.

  5. What if I am late dropping off or picking up my child? Please call us at 919-749-0782 and let us know if you will be running late dropping off or picking up your child.

Dakota Fire Holes are amazing primitive technology! At this workshop we will build on the lessons from the first two fire workshops and make our own fire hole. We will also use the fire to cook some food and enjoy the smoky goodness only fire cooking can provide! Food is included!

Dress comfortably and to be outside. Please bring water in a refillable water bottle, snacks, and blanket. Bring insect repellent if you want.

Come on out for some fun around the fire! This workshop will teach you how to efficiently build a safe and effective fire. You will learn to use different species of woods, the difference between tinder, kindling and fuel wood and the various stages of fires. There is nothing like the smell of a fire to reconnect people to nature! This is a pre-requisite for our Advanced Fire Workshop.

Backcountry shelters do not have to be expensive or complicated, but you do need to know what you are doing to be safe and secure. This workshop will teach participants the knots and techniques to construct sturdy backcountry shelters out of tarps, canoes and things you find in the forest. Be ready for the unexpected on your adventures and build your self-confidence with some good old fashioned know how!

We live right on the edge of ancient North America. The soils at the end of the driveway are of the Coastal Plain and about 400 million years younger than the soils on the rest of the property. On this hike we will delve into the geological features found throughout the stream banks and rocks and learn about the geologic forces that created North Carolina's unique landscape.

Swift Creek Hike

Let’s really explore the land! We will look at all the different ecosystems on this adventure. The upland forest, the field, the bottomlands and the riparian zones (the areas around the creek) are all different. We will leave the trail and enjoy some wandering in search of a nice lunch spot. This is a great way to get some experience off trail and practice the art of “staying found”!

Come get to know your plant friends and allies. We will learn five edible and medicinal plants that live in the North Carolina piedmont. We will look at how to identify these plants and tell them apart from others that look like them. We will get to know each plant in terms of where it lives, how it grows and what makes it special. When does this plant provide food? When, how and what parts do you gather for medicine? Can this plant be used to make things we need such as tools, crafts, dyes or soap? We will do some foraging together and see what we can find to eat!
